Best Windows for a Victorian or Edwardian Terrace

Period terraces have a distinctive window rhythm — usually vertical sliding sashes with slim glazing bars — and getting the replacement right protects both the home’s character and its value. Here’s how to modernise performance without losing the look.

Keep the sash profile

For most Victorian and Edwardian homes, a timber or timber-alternative sash window is the natural fit. Modern versions slide and tilt like the originals but add draught seals, warm double glazing and secure multi-point locks.

Consider flush-sash casements

Where the originals were casements, a flush-sash design — where the opening sash sits flush within the frame — gives a clean, traditional appearance that looks far more authentic than a standard chunky casement.

Heritage colours and detailing

Off-whites, heritage creams, sage greens and “Chartwell”-style tones, plus astragal or Georgian bars and period-style furniture, make a big difference to kerb appeal on a terrace.

Check conservation rules first

In a conservation area, replacing windows visible from the street may need planning permission even though it’s normally permitted development, and the council may specify materials or styles. A local installer who knows your area will advise — get quotes and mention your property’s period and location.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get double glazing in a conservation area?

Often yes, but the style and sometimes the material may be restricted, and permission can be required. Slim-profile and heritage units are designed for this.

Are timber-alternative sashes as good as timber?

Modern uPVC and composite sashes need far less maintenance and perform very well; timber offers the most authentic finish for the purist.
